Senior Consultant – Mineral Economics and Risk, Stantec

Richard Bishop is a Senior Consultant at Stantec in the Mineral Economics and Risk group and a Professor of Practice at the Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research (VCCER) at Virginia Tech. He has over 20 years of experience in the mining industry, working extensively on mining projects across Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe. At the VCCER, he led the Evolve Central Appalachia project funded by the U.S. Dept of Energy, exploring for rare earths and critical minerals in the coalfields of VA, WV, KY, and TN. He is now leading the larger Phase II project, Expand Appalachia CORE-CM, to further characterize critical mineral occurrences across 11 states from Tennessee and North Carolina up through Maine.

He holds BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees in mining engineering from Virginia Tech, as well as a master’s in mining engineering from the European Mining Course in Finland, England, Germany, and the Netherlands.
