For years, coal has been sidelined, often due to environmental concerns. However, this perspective neglects the essential role coal plays in providing affordable and reliable energy. To maintain our nation’s access to such energy, we must focus on building and upgrading necessary infrastructure and leveraging technology in our data-driven world. The coal industry needs to be proactive and assertive in advocating for sensible regulatory reforms, investments in coal technologies, grid reliability, and the protection of American jobs. Coal is not merely a relic of the past; it is a vital component of America’s future, and we must ensure it remains a significant part of our natural resource portfolio.

Our industry and nation celebrated a decisive victory on November 5 with the sweeping re-election of President Trump. The coal industry has been presented with a unique opportunity to reset America’s natural resource policy. The election results reflect a clear call from the American people for a commonsense approach to energy and industry – one that prioritizes affordability, reliability, and sustainability. For those of us in the coal industry, this is our moment to amplify coal’s importance, not just as an energy source but as a vital component of America’s industrial prosperity.

“Coal has long been the backbone of America’s dominance as a world economic leader, yet its importance has been overshadowed by misconceptions and misguided policies. As we stand on the brink of a new era, it’s time to recognize coal’s vital role in our nation’s future.”

Coal remains a cornerstone of modern life. It powers our homes and businesses, fuels the electrification of our daily lives, provides the coke essential for steel production, building the cities, automobiles, ships, and planes that drive our economy. Beyond energy, coal is the foundation for high-tech advancements, from carbon foam to graphene, and is a critical component in modern medicine, space exploration, and even everyday items like bowling balls.

In addition to meeting fundamental American needs, coal serves as an economic lifeline for numerous communities. The administration’s dedication to overturning policies that have adversely affected coal regions is a significant relief for families who rely on mining for their livelihoods.

Coal mining supports hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs, from miners and equipment operators to truck drivers, barge and shipping crews, electric company employees, mining and environmental engineers, workers at coking facilities, steelworkers, electricians, railroad workers, equipment vendors and manufacturers. Additionally, it fuels local economies through tax revenues and infrastructure investments.

Coal is not just an industry; it’s a way of life for millions of Americans. Trump’s policies give hope to communities that have faced economic uncertainty in recent years. Efforts to ensure the sustainability of coal communities are vital to preserving their rich cultural heritage and economic contributions.

Arthun, seen here on a mine visit, said the ACC envisions a future where coal continues to provide energy reliability and environmental innovation.

The way forward
Despite the promising outlook for coal, significant challenges persist. The push for renewable energy mandates, state-level restrictions on fossil fuels, and the closure of base-load power plants pose threats to grid reliability and thermal coal. In addition, trade policies and market fluctuations are impacting U.S. metallurgical coal. Tariffs, environmental regulation, and geopolitically tensions are influencing coal prices and trade agreements. These challenges highlight the necessity of fostering a regulatory environment that encourages investment and innovation within the coal sector.

Reliability and resilience should be the cornerstones of America’s energy policy. President Trump’s dedication to these principles is crucial for meeting the nation’s growing energy demands. In addition, the versatility and necessity of metallurgical coal is vital for a thriving nation rebuilding its domestic infrastructure. As the nation progresses under President Trump’s second term, the coal industry is set for a revival. With supportive policies, technological advancements, rebuilding manufacturing and infrastructure and a commitment to energy independence, coal will continue to be a vital component of the nation’s energy strategy.

The ACC envisions a future where coal continues to provide economic stability, energy reliability, and environmental innovation. By working closely with the administration, industry leaders, and communities, we can achieve these goals and secure a prosperous future for coal.

Charting the path forward: Four key priorities
To secure the future of coal, we must focus on four critical priorities:

  1. Protecting the nation’s coal supply chain
Permitting reform is essential. We must streamline the approval process for new projects and ensure existing permits are protected from unwarranted federal intervention. A strong supply chain is the backbone of our industry.
  2. Enhancing coal transportation infrastructure
From rail access and port facilities to river systems and roadways, robust infrastructure is vital to keeping U.S. coal competitive domestically and internationally. Reducing transportation costs will strengthen our economic standing and energy security.
  3. Ensuring grid reliability and affordability
Coal’s role in stabilizing the electric grid is unparalleled. Unlike intermittent renewable sources, coal-fired plants operate continuously, ensuring a steady energy supply during peak demand and extreme weather. With on-site fuel stockpiles, coal plants remain resilient to supply chain disruptions, providing price stability and reliability.
  4. Developing and supporting the coal workforce
Workforce challenges remain a pressing issue across all industries. Addressing shortages in skilled trade such as welding, mechanics, and electrical work – and professional roles like engineering and accounting is critical for the coal sector’s success.

Now is the time to champion the importance of coal and secure its role in America’s future. As an industry, we must be bold and proactive. Together, we can overcome the challenges ahead and ensure coal remains a cornerstone of our nation’s energy landscape.

Let us move forward with strength and determination—because with your help, we can make coal great again.
